Dear Friends of Globe Unified School District,

School is officially out for the 2019-2020 school-year.  Wow, what a year!  Who would have ever thought that we would not be present at school for the last three months of the year?  The COVID -19 pandemic has changed the way we all look at our lives, school included.  What will another year bring?  As we work through the issues we will have to face, we have lots of questions, but very few answers as of yet.

I just wanted to take a minute to say that even though these last couple of months have been challenging, I have been very proud of the way our staff, students, families and community have responded to the issues at hand.  Our staff went above and beyond to stay connected to our students through phone calls and online communications.  Our students were engaged and working hard to get assignments done.  Our families and community were very invested in keeping in touch with the school.  Many thanks to you all.

I have also been very proud of the job that our food service program has been super supportive of our students and has faithfully served meals to them throughout the duration of the pandemic.  The food service department has consistently met the nutritional needs of about 400 students per day beginning in March and extending through to almost the end of June.

Our 2020 graduates have had a wild curveball thrown their way this spring as compared to a normal graduation season.  School sponsored events such as Jr.-Sr. Prom, Senior Honors Award Program, and Senior Banquet have all gone by the wayside.  GHS provided a positive event on Thursday, May 21st, 2020 by sponsoring a Graduation Sign Walk at Harbison Field.  Graduating seniors were honored with a color photo sign with their name on it and all of the signs for the Class of 2020 were displayed around the track at Harbison.  About 80% of our seniors came with their families (properly socially distance from other families) and walked the track to see their student’s sign along with all of their classmates.

As is almost always the case there are many things happening in GUSD right now.  It would have been busy with or without COVID -19.  This year though, it seems like we have all had to step up and figure out how to do things a little differently.  As superintendent of GUSD I am very humbled to work with a great staff, board of education, students, families and communities that support our district.  We will continue to strive to live up to our vision of “Capturing Hearts, Empowering Minds”.

Best wishes in these uncertain time,

    Jerry Jennex, Superintendent

    Globe Unified School District #1
